GigaOM, the tech blog network has reported that Apple is working with Gemalto (SIM card manufacturer) to develop a SIM card that is integrated into the iPhone’s chipset.

This allows complete control by Apple to prevent hot swapping of SIM cards and direct sales of the iPhone to the user via its Apple Stores and online stores.

The user can then download the carrier specific configurations onto the integrated SIM to get their phone up and running.

This change appears to be for European models where there are many carriers providing the iPhone.

That said, my guess would be Apple might just implement this across the board. This piece of news is not surprising seeing as Apple wishes to take complete control of the product.

Looks like that there won’t be a need for that specialized pin to remove the SIM card. One less item to include in that already minimalist iPhone box.
